North Star NSRO42C4 Reverse Osmosis System Review
The NSRO42C4 is a compact reverse osmosis system that minimizes cysts, sediment, lead, rust, chromium, sodium, chlorine and odors. Technically speaking, this model is not a traditional water softener, but it will reduce the contaminants in your water. You’ll be left with crisp, clean-tasting water instantly.
Weighing just 16.6 pounds, this model is lightweight and fits right underneath the sink. It’s easy to install, too, and comes with a helpful installation kit.
The only complaint we had was that the tank holds just two gallons. This is great for underneath a single sink, but it’s easy to go through two gallons of water if you’re washing dishes or taking a shower. This is not a whole-house system and is sufficient for most sinks, but the smaller two-gallon tank is something you should be aware of. Some users replace the tank with a larger one, which is a great option if the OEM tank is not sufficient enough for your home.
- Two-gallon tank
- Installation kit included
- Reduces cysts, lead, rest, sediment, chromium, sodium, odor, and chlorine taste
- Weight: 16.6 pounds
- Dimensions: 18.2” x 18.2” x 20”
Despite its one minor flaw, the NSRO42C4 surpassed our expectations. It’s efficient, thorough and easy to install. Plus, reverse osmosis is the preferred method for water filtration because it does a superior job at removing contaminants and toxins.
North Star NST70UD1 Water Softener
Efficient, easy to install and virtually maintenance-free, the NST70UD1 is a great choice for homes with very hard water and large families. This model boasts a rated efficiency of 5,110 grains per one pound of salt.
Designed to handle very hard water and high water demands, the NST70UD1 offers 13.5 GPM service flow rate and a maximum capacity of 70,000 grains. It’s also capable of removing up to 19 ppm of clear water iron.
The included backlit LCD display makes it easy to see even in low light conditions, and conveniently displays water hardness, time, remaining capacity, regeneration time, total daily usage, current flow, an average daily usage. You also have the option of choosing gallons or liters and 12 or 24 hours.
What we really liked about this model is that it’s literally a “set it and forget it” unit. Simply set your water hardness and the time, and you’re good to go.
This unit can be installed without the help of a professional, but expect to spend at least two hours on the process, especially if this is your first time installing a water softener yourself. North Star does include detailed installation instructions, which makes the process far less painful.
- 1” MIP valve
- 70,000 grain capacity
- 5gpm service flow rate
- Removes up to 19ppm of clear water iron
If you have very hard water or a large family, the NST70UD1 may just be the right choice for you. Efficient with a large capacity, this unit can easily stand up to high water usage demands, and is virtually maintenance-free. Just set it and forget it – and enjoy softer water as a result.
North Star NSC25ED Water Softener Review
The NSC25ED is a cabinet model from North Star that offers a 26,600 maximum grain capacity and 6gpm flow rate. Designed for smaller homes and moderate hard water, this unit can also remove up to 7ppm of clear water iron.
Featuring a backlit LCD display, this unit includes North Star’s famous “Look Ahead” technology. What this does is monitor your water usage and determine when regeneration is necessary. This technology allows you to use up to 60% less salt, and it learns your water usage patterns to improve efficiency along the way.
The NSC25ED is capable of maintaining accurate time for a maximum of 72 hours without needing batteries. So, if a power outage occurs, your water softener will continue working and supplying you with soft water. If the power outage lasts longer, you’ll only need to input the current time, and your system will remember the rest.
Like other models from North Star, this unit will need to be installed as close as possible to your home’s pressure tank or water meter. Installation is relatively simple, and North Star includes detailed, helpful instructions that will walk you through every step of the process.
Because of its lower grain capacity and flow rate, this model is better suited for smaller homes or moderately hard water. If you have a larger home or very hard water, the NST70UD1 may be the better option.
- 26,600 maximum grain capacity
- 6gpm flow rate
- Removes up to 7ppm of clear water iron
- 5,000 grains per one pound of salt
There’s a lot to love about the NSC25ED, but we especially like this unit’s efficiency features. With “Look Ahead” technology, we’re able to save on salt and water usage. And with the time keeper function, we never have to worry about not having soft water during a power outage.
North Star is one the largest manufacturers of water softeners, and is trusted brand in the industry. These top three models are used by millions of homes worldwide, and offer something for every household size and budget. Whether you have a large family, moderately hard water or are simply looking to filter your water, North Star has the right model for you.
